Top 10 Reasons to Go
Chances are you won’t have to go through all 10 before a you’re sold on the destination, but here are the top reasons travelers should vacation in St. Lucia.
1. Diamond Botanical Gardens & Waterfall: Follow the path to a natural gorge and waterfall and, beyond that, mineral baths where Josephine Bonaparte bathed as a young girl.
2. La Soufriere Drive-in Volcano: More than 20 belching pools of sulfur perfume the air – which is more overwhelming than tour companies usually admit. And while you can’t actually peer over the edge of a crater, it’s a fascinating way to spend a few hours.
3. The Pitons: The twin peaks covered in lush tropical vegetation symbolize St. Lucia. They’re not identical – Petit Piton is actually taller than Gros Piton – and you can climb either with a guide.
4. Keyhole Pinnacles: Get out your snorkeling gear and don’t forget your underwater camera. These 4 underwater sea mountains mimic the vibrant beauty of the Pitons. Colorful corals, vibrant sea sponges and fans decorate the thousand-foot peaks.
5. Beaches: Take your pick on St. Lucia – all beaches on the island are public.
6. Entertainment: Join in the fun with islanders and tourists Friday nights in Gros Islet and Anse La Raye. Nosh on grilled chicken, down rum punch and dance in the streets all night long.
7. Castries – The capital city of Castries (along with its nearby villages) is home to 40% of the island’s population, and bombards you with the energy of a Caribbean city on the go. A throbbing calypso beat permeates everything, and colorful sights and delicious smells will overwhelm your senses. Find your way through the crowded streets to the market area – the central spot for locals to sell their wares and creations, and a perfect place to get a real authentic taste of St. Lucian life. The busy, packed city is compact, gritty, and unforgettably charming.
8. Pigeon Island – Pigeon Island’s spicy history goes way back to the 1550s: St Lucia’s original French used the island as their base to raid passing Spanish ships. 200 years later, British admiral George Rodney fortified the island, using it to deploy his most decisive military engagements. In the 1970s, a causeway was built of sand between Gros Islet and Pigeon Island, making the island a peninsula. And in 1979 Pigeon ‘Island’ was established as a National Park.
9. St. Lucia Jazz Festival – the week of the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, in early May, is one of the most lively, highly-anticipated, and well-attended events of its kind in the entire Caribbean. Renowned international jazz legends perform at cool outdoor venues on Pigeon Island and all over the island at various hotels, restaurants, and nightspots. In downtown Castries, free concerts are given at Derek Walcott Square.
